The Desktop Architect role is a strategic position within the Client Engineering and Support team, focusing on designing, implementing, and optimizing desktop computing environments to meet UWM's business objectives. This role requires a deep understanding of desktop technologies, industry best practices, and emerging trends to develop innovative solutions that enhance productivity, security, and user experience.

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

  • Planning and coordinating OS upgrades, software rollouts and hardware refresh cycle
  • Serve as a mentor to the Desktop Engineering and Administration team
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to understand and solution for end-user technical requirements
  • Establishing workstation standards, configurations and best practices
  • Designing and optimizing our desktop computing environment to meet business needs
  • Work closely with other Enterprise Technology teams

Objectives:

  • Designing and architecting desktop infrastructure solutions, including hardware, operating systems, software applications, and peripherals, to meet the organization's current and future needs.
  • Evaluating new desktop technologies, tools, and solutions to identify opportunities for improvement and ensure alignment with business requirements and IT standards.
  • Establishing and enforcing desktop standards, configurations, and best practices to streamline support processes, improve system performance, and enhance security posture.
  • Collaborating with stakeholders to understand end-user requirements and preferences, and designing user-centric desktop environments that optimize productivity and client satisfaction.
  • Implementing robust security measures and compliance controls to protect desktop systems, data, and networks against cybersecurity threats and regulatory requirements.
  • Planning and coordinating desktop deployment projects, including operating system upgrades, software rollouts, and hardware refresh cycles, to minimize disruption and ensure smooth transitions.
  • Providing technical guidance, mentoring, and support to the Desktop Engineering team, and fostering collaboration to achieve shared goals and objectives.

WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related experience.
  • 10+ years of combined experience in desktop architecture, desktop engineering, or related roles.
  • Strong knowledge of desktop operating systems (Windows, macOS, Linux), hardware, software applications, and peripherals.
  • Proficiency in desktop management tools (SCCM, Intune, Jamf Pro, etc.) and scripting languages (PowerShell, Python, etc.).
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, analytical thinking, and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., Microsoft Certified: Modern Desktop Administrator Associate, VMware Certified Professional – Desktop and Mobility, etc.) are a plus.
