UWM is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Team Leader to lead our Internal Developer Portal (IDP) team. This is a critical role responsible for guiding the development, maintenance, and strategic direction of our IDP, which serves as the central hub for our engineering organization. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in software development, team leadership, and a deep understanding of the developer experience (DX) and DevOps principles.

 

As the Team Leader for the Internal Developer Portal (IDP) team, you will be responsible for a small, highly effective team of engineers. Your primary goal will be to empower our internal developers by providing them with the tools, information, and automation necessary to build, deploy, and manage their applications efficiently and securely. You will be a key player in shaping our engineering culture and improving developer productivity across the organization.

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

  • Team Leadership & Management:
    • Lead, mentor, and manage a team of software engineers, fostering a culture of cllaboration, innovation, and ownership.
    • Conduct regular one-on-one meetings, provide constructive feedback, and support the professional growth of each team member.
    • Allocate team resources effectively, manage project timelines, and ensure the team meets its objectives.
    • Facilitate collaboration on your team, and among our other technical discipline leads.
  • Technical Strategy & Roadmap:
    • Define and execute the long-term strategy and roadmap for the Internal Developer Portal in alignment with company-wide engineering goals.
    • Partner with engineering leaders, architects, and product managers to identify pain points and gather requirements for new features and improvements to the IDP.
    • Research and evaluate new technologies and tools to enhance the IDP and the overall developer experience.
  • Product & Platform Development:
    • Oversee the end-to-end development lifecycle of the IDP, from design and implementation to deployment and maintenance.
    • Ensure the IDP is reliable, scalable, and secure, with a focus on high availability and performance.
    • Champion best practices in software development, including code reviews, automated testing, continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD), and documentation.
  • Stakeholder Engagement & Communication:
    • Act as the primary point of contact for the IDP, communicating its value, features, and roadmap to internal stakeholders.
    • Collaborate with other platform teams (e.g., SRE, DevOps, security) to integrate various tools and services seamlessly into the IDP.
    • Gather user feedback and translate it into actionable improvements for the portal.

WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU

Must Have Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in software development, with a strong background in platform engineering, DevOps, or a related field.
  • 2+ years of experience in a team leadership or management role.
  • Proven experience building and maintaining complex software systems and platforms.
  • Solid understanding of modern software development practices, including microservices, APIs, and cloud-native architectures (e.g., Kubernetes, Docker).
  • Experience with a major cloud provider (e.g., AWS, GCP, Azure).
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
  • Familiarity with the concept of an Internal Developer Portal (IDP) and the surrounding ecosystem (e.g., Backstage, Port, Cortex).
  • Knowledge of CI/CD tools and platforms (e.g., Jenkins, GitLab CI, GitHub Actions).
  • Ability to work 100% onsite in Pontiac, Michigan.

Nice to Have Qualifications:

  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools such as Terraform or Ansible.
  • Experience with developer experience (DX) principles and a passion for improving the lives of engineers. Familiarity with observability tools (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog).
