The Cash Bankruptcy Specialist plays a critical role in the mortgage servicing process by ensuring accurate and compliant processing of borrower payments, bankruptcy-related financial transactions, and cash application in accounts under bankruptcy protection. This role supports the company’s compliance with federal bankruptcy laws and investor guidelines while maintaining a strong customer service focus.
• Accurately apply and reconcile borrower payments on bankruptcy accounts, including trustee payments, post-petition payments, and suspense resolution.
• Review bankruptcy court documents such as Chapter 13 plans, trustee ledgers, and court orders to determine how payments should be applied.
• Monitor and track trustee disbursements and ensure timely posting to the correct accounts.
• Coordinate with internal departments (bankruptcy, cash operations, payment processing, etc.) to ensure compliance with bankruptcy regulations and servicing guidelines.
• Perform account reconciliations for bankruptcy loans, resolving cash misapplications or unapplied funds.
• Ensure all transactions follow investor and regulatory guidelines, including RESPA, CFPB, and bankruptcy law.
• Support accurate and timely bankruptcy reporting and audit responses.
• Identify and escalate complex issues that require legal or compliance input.
• Document all work in the servicing platform and maintain audit-ready files.
Must-Have Qualifications:
• High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or related field preferred.
• 2+ years of experience in mortgage servicing, bankruptcy processing, or cash management.
• Strong knowledge of bankruptcy processes (particularly Chapters 7 and 13) and their impact on mortgage servicing.
• Familiarity with MSP (Black Knight), FiServ, or similar loan servicing systems is a plus.
• Excellent attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
• Ability to work independently in a deadline-driven environment.
• Proficient in Microsoft Excel and other Office applications.
Nice To Have Qualifications:
• Experience working with bankruptcy trustees and courts.
• Knowledge of investor guidelines (Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, FHA, VA).
• Strong analytical and reconciliation skills.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
